Mission/purpose of the job
This position is responsible for ensuring that any project initiative undertaken by our company, is profitable and will deliver long term financial benefits for the company.
This responsibility needs to be fulfilled by means of:
1. Monitoring and controlling the costs of individual projects within the project portfolio.
2. Ensuring that the product cost forecasts are consistent with the overall objective of ensuring a profitable product portfolio.
3. Most importantly, the role requires you to provide clear recommendations on the project direction, to the CPM (Chief Project Manager) and the FRG (Finance reference group), chaired by the CFO or his nominated delegate.
The role requires the finance PM to ensure that:
1. The “Payment Plan”, which is a forecast of the project activities and costs, is in line with the frame approved by the “Product Committee (PC)” (The PC is the ultimate decision body that governs all project activities in the company and is made up of C-Suite executives.
2. The cost forecast which is updated by the respective engineering functions are reasonable and within the scope of what has been approved by the relevant governing body.
3. The product pricing model is correct and appropriate given the market segment that the product will address.
The expected product cost and resulting gross profit will stand up to scrutiny of project feasibility which is measured in terms of NPV (Net Present Value of future cash flows) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return).
To fulfil the above responsibilities and meet the requirements of the role described above:
1. The PM Finance will need to work with and communicate with engineers, projects managers and colleagues from purchasing and finance to ensure that projects are proceeding in a manner that will deliver sustainable profitability for the company.
2. The information being used to prepare year end estimates and budgets is accurate.
3. The projects costs are monitored using a system called “PCMT” and the role requires the ability to use this system effectively and become proficient in its use.
The candidate will be pro-active and a forward looking to anticipate project cost trends and obstacles and be able to communicate such information in a timely and accurate manner to Management and the Business control team. The ideal candidate will need to be a “Team Player” but also need to be a strong minded individual with the ability to say “NO”, if and when any department makes requests that are inconsistent with the approved direction. In essence, the PM-Finance will be the CFO of the “Project Team” and guide the CPM and Team in the correct direction.
Key responsibilities / accountabilities
• Support the cross functional “project team” to deliver a financially viable product.
• Good understanding of investment decision methodologies and tools eg. NPV and IRR
• Support the creation of Business Intelligence (BI) reports for project progress tracking.
• Provide clear direction to the “project team” in order to ensure that the project does not deviate from the stated financial targets (Project Cost, Product Cost & Overall business feasibility)
• Advise the CPM on corrective actions, if and when project deviations occur.
Preferred educational and/or training qualifications and certificates
• Hold a university degree, preferably in an Engineering field
• Project management and/or business administration qualification is a distinct advantage
• Experience in automotive industry is a plus
Preferred experience and knowledge
• 3 years or more experience in product development OR projects controlling.
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience of working in a Japanese organization is a plus.
• Customer and business-oriented mind-set
Necessary technical/functional/language skills
• Business level English
• Fluent level Japanese
